CARE—California Alternate Rates for Energy (Gas & Electric)

The CARE program provides a 20% discount on monthly gas & electric bills for qualifying households. Qualifications are based on the number of people living in your home and your total household income including wages, government checks and benefits, and other financial support you or members of your household receive.

The income guidelines below are established annually by the California Public Utilities Commission.

Effective until June 1, 2011.

You may already qualify if you receive benefits from any of the following programs:

  • Medi-Cal
  • TANF (AFDC)
  • Food Stamps
  • WIC
  • Healthy Families Category A & B
  • SSI
  • LIHEAP
  • NSL Free Lunch Program
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
  • Head Start Income Eligible (Tribal Only)
