Meet TURN's board members

CARL WOOD, CHAIRPERSON: CHERRY VALLEY, CA
Carl is Director of Regulatory Affairs with the Utility Workers Union of America and served as a Commissioner on the California Public Utilities Commission (2000–2006). His expertise represents the intersection between consumer protections and worker safety.

CONSTANCE SLIDER PIERRE, SECRETARY: OAKLAND, CA

Constance Slider Pierre brings expertise in program development, organizing, coalition building and strategic planning to TURN's Board. She led a successful 6 year campaign to stop the siting of a natural gas storage facility in her community in West Sacramento.

JEFF SHIELDS, TREASURER: RIPON, CA
Jeff is the General Manager of the South San Joaquin Irrigation District. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Public Power Council & Northwest Energy Coalition. He has 22 years of experience managing electric utilities in California and Oregon.

MARGARITA ROCHA: FRESNO, CA
Margarita has served as Executive Director of Centro La Familia Advocacy for 20 years, serving the needs of low–income Central Valley residents. She brings a commitment and expertise in reaching and galvanizing immigrant communities into civic participation.

SURESH BAZAJ: FREMONT, CA
Suresh Bazaj is an entrepreneur who has been working in the Telecom industry since 1973. As a volunteer before joining the board, he was instrumental in TURN receiving a $340,000 Cy Pres award to support our telecom advocacy.

MELANIE SHELBY: OAKLAND, CA

Melanie is Managing Director at Gray, Greer, Shelby and Vaughn, a certified minority and woman owned public affairs firm that specializes in supplier diversity, government relations, and strategic partnerships.  She brings the perspsective of challenges faced by small businesses.

BILL JULIAN: DAVIS, CA

Bill is a telecom and utilities regulatory consultant who spent 20 years as Chief Policy Advisor for the California Assembly Energy Utilities and Communications Committee.  He was a key negotiator of the original California LifeLine legilsation in 1983.
