Meet TURN's board members

CARL WOOD, CHAIRPERSON: CHERRY VALLEY, CA
Carl is Director of Regulatory Affairs with the Utility Workers Union of America and served as a Commissioner on the California Public Utilities Commission (2000–2006). His expertise represents the intersection between consumer protections and worker safety.

CONSTANCE SLIDER PIERRE, SECRETARY: OAKLAND, CA

Constance Slider Pierre brings expertise in program development, organizing, coalition building and strategic planning to TURN's Board. She led a successful 6 year campaign to stop the siting of a natural gas storage facility in her community in West Sacramento.

JEFF SHIELDS, TREASURER: RIPON, CA
Jeff is the General Manager of the South San Joaquin Irrigation District. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Public Power Council & Northwest Energy Coalition. He has 22 years of experience managing electric utilities in California and Oregon.

SURESH BAZAJ: FREMONT, CA
Suresh Bazaj is an entrepreneur who has been working in the Telecom industry since 1973. As a volunteer before joining the board, he was instrumental in TURN receiving a $340,000 Cy Pres award to support our telecom advocacy.

MELANIE SHELBY: OAKLAND, CA

Melanie is Managing Director at Gray, Greer, Shelby and Vaughn, a certified minority and woman owned public affairs firm that specializes in supplier diversity, government relations, and strategic partnerships.  She brings the perspsective of challenges faced by small businesses.

 

DOLORES SANCHEZ: ASUZA, CA

Dolores is a life long political activist who spent years working for elected officials, including serving as chief of staff to Assembly Majority Leader Marco Firebaugh, and later working as a community organizer for AARP. She brings the voice of San Gabriel Valley residents concerned about air quality and monthly utility bills.

KORI CHEN: OAKLAND, CA

Kori is an owner of a coffee roasting business, and brings the challenges faced by small businesses as utility customers.  He served on the TURN staff as Grassroots Organizer between 2010 and 2012, and has extensive experience as an organizer and entrepreneur. 

VERONICA FIELDS • LANCASTER

Veronica is an organizer in her early 20’s who has mobilized hundreds of people to turn out for rallies and public hearings in her community.  Veronica brings the voice of residents in the high desert, and experience using social media to motivate young people to become politically involved.

BILL NUSBAUM • BRENTWOOD

Bill has 35 years experience working in the telecom industry for regulators, major carriers, and consumer advocates.  He served as TURN Senior Telecom and Managing Attorney between 2003—2013, and brings to the Board an institutional history of TURN policy battles and deep management experience.
