Philanthropy Director

TURN Description:

TURN (The Utility Reform Network) is a non-profit advocacy organization committed to ensuring affordable, reliable, and sustainable utility services for all Californians. We advocate for equitable policies that protect consumers, particularly in underserved communities, through policy change, research, and grassroots engagement.

Job Overview:

The Philanthropy Director’s primary responsibility will be creating and implementing fundraising strategies that increase support from foundations, corporations, and special events while maintaining support from our existing network of supporters. A key member of TURN’s leadership team, the Philanthropy Director will oversee the revenue-generating efforts of the organization, manage donor relations, and ensure that systems and policies in place support the successful execution of fundraising strategy and annual plans. The Philanthropy Director is an experienced people manager who can work effectively with permanent staff or independent contractors. This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong background in Development and nonprofit operations who has excellent communication skills, a passion for TURN’s issues, and a commitment to equitable community development.

Key Responsibilities:

Fundraising Strategy

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to meet the financial needs of TURN.

  • Partner with Executive Leadership to execute the overall development strategy, managing change and adjusting accordingly.

  • Campaign Manager: Create and manage fundraising campaigns, including online, direct mail, and event-based initiatives.

  • Track and report on fundraising progress and financial metrics to senior leadership.

Grant writing and management

  • Write, submit, and manage grant proposals, ensuring all deadlines are met.

  • Prospect research and relationship building: Identify potential grant opportunities from government, corporate, and foundation sources.

  • Maintain relationships with grantors and provide timely reporting and updates.

  • Collaborate with the communications team to create compelling fundraising messaging.

Donor Relations

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with individual donors, corporate sponsors, and foundations. Develop and implement donor recognition programs to enhance donor retention.

  • Development Infrastructure: Routine review of donor database systems that support development to ensure they are best suited to meet goals, making recommendations for refinements as needed.

  • Planned Giving: Conduct an assessment and develop plans and materials to systematically recruit planned gifts of appreciated stocks, bequests, etc.

  • Community Engagement and Representation: Willingness to travel to attend meetings, visit with donors, and represent TURN and its values in public-facing opportunities with donors, community members, and partners.

Strategic Advising

  • Financial Management: Prepare and manage fundraising budgets.

  • Advise the Executive Director on funding matters in relation to budgeting and articulate the financial story of the organization for fundraising and business development purposes.

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to align fundraising strategies with the organization’s strategic goals.

  • Participate in the organization's strategic planning process and contribute to the overall management of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent and minimum 10+ experience in Nonprofit Management, Communications, business, or related field.

  • Minimum of 7+ years of proven leadership in fundraising strategy, preferably in a nonprofit organization. Knowledge of trends in national, statewide, and local Development.

  • Extensive knowledge of nonprofit fundraising and the philanthropic landscape.

  • A self-starter and strategic thinker with an entrepreneurial mindset to drive innovation in fundraising approaches and adapt to evolving philanthropic landscapes.

  • Expertise in conducting prospect research and analysis to identify new funding opportunities and cultivate potential donors.

  • Skilled in building and maintaining strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including donors, community members, and partners.

  • Proven skills in grant writing and success in securing grants and meeting fundraising targets.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including being highly skilled in creating and delivering compelling presentations at events and funder meetings.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Passion for community development and the mission of TURN.Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Communications, Business, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the nonprofit sector, particularly in advocacy or consumer protection organizations.

  • Knowledge of California’s utility policies and issues affecting consumers.

  • Proficiency in grant management software and Microsoft Office Suite.

Work Hours:

  • Full-Time, 40+ hours. Monday – Friday.

  • This position is based out of TURN’s Oakland, CA headquarters. The majority of TURN’s team works on a hybrid schedule, but remote work may be negotiable for the right candidate.

Salary Range for Position – Philanthropy Director:

$145K-$175K DOE
